Live online workshop January 11-15, 2021
We are excited to offer something different: Making Magic with Steel and Silver, an online workshop packed with information, hands-on skills and fun. You’ll learn to:
- Work with mild steel sheet and wire, including the basics of cutting, forming, and polishing.
- Fuse silver to steel, a technique that produces a galaxy of bright silver patterns against the steel.
- Bond silver foil to steel using the Keum Boo technique, an ancient Korean process. Who knew that silver foil could be bonded beautifully to steel producing an amazing contrast between the two metals?
- Reticulate silver to create flowing ridges and valleys and combine it with steel through soldering, fusing and layering. The flowing dimensional patterns of reticulated silver contrast beautifully against the smooth urban look of steel.
- Water cast silver pods, cups, beans and other shapes to adorn your mixed metals jewelry. Achieve consistent results with your castings and incorporate them into your steel and silver designs.
- Solder silver to steel, allowing you to explore new mixed metals fabrication techniques.
- Apply patinas to steel, including heat and chemical patinas.
- Seal your steel jewelry to preserve and protect its beauty.

Metamorphic Mokume
October 3 and 4, 2020 - sold out
November 7 & 8, 2020 - Saturday & Sunday 10am-4pm PDT (1pm-7pm eastern) - sold out
Instructor: Anne Wolf. Tuition $240 + $62-$122 kit fee (+tax & shipping or kit available for pick up)
Take your mokume gane patterning to a whole new level - beyond stamping, twisting and chiseling. At a fundamental level, mokume gane patterning is analogous to the geologic processes of uplift, metamorphosis, and erosion. In this newly expanded class, Anne reveals unexpected ways to pattern which she has discovered over the years. With hammers, stamps and other tools we will metamorphosize the blank mokume gane sheet; the patterns will begin to appear as our files erode away the disturbed layers. The focus will be on creating uniquely patterned mokume sheet that can be used later to make jewelry, box lids, and more. Best for students who have taken at least one mokume gane class, or well-equipped and motivated beginners. This online class is designed to work just like an in-person workshop. We’ll be teaching via Zoom and you’re encouraged to work on your piece and ask questions along the way:
Basic Materials Kit: 2 pieces of copper/brass mokume gane, steel stamping and forming tools, sanding discs and mandrel, sandpaper and wax. $62
Deluxe Materials Kit: Includes all above, plus a piece of silver/copper mokume and sample size of Baldwin’s patina. $122
Equipment you will need: Rough files, jeweler’s hand files, small cross-pein hammer, torch for annealing, sturdy forging surface, planishing hammer, wooden dapping block or sandbag, large inexpensive ball pein hammer. Optional: rolling mill, pattern plates or other rolling mill textures, stamp tools. This class has passed. For current offerings, see our Classes page.

The kits will include almost everything you'll need for Keum Boo on Steel, but you will need to provide some of your own supplies and tools, including:
- Firebricks, charcoal blocks or a screen - something to support your metal from below (so you can heat with a torch from below),Torch: any type of torch will work for Keum Boo including a small butane torch. Only a small flame is needed, so avoid any large "flame throwers." Dual gas or single gas torches work well, but use the smallest torch tip that you have.
- Pickle pot - start with a fresh solution of pickle. Any pickle will work; however, Sparex No. 1 works faster for steel. While using your pickle pot for steel, do not use it for other metals such as silver or gold as these will become copper plated. Tongs should be plastic or steel (not copper).
- Saw and 2/0 or 3/0 blades (4/0 if you plan to do fine piercing). I use slightly finer blades for steel because the coarser ones tend to "catch" on the steel.
- Pumice type cleaner - GoJo, Fast Orange or even household cleanser will work.
- Alcohol - denatured or isopropyl. Or any good degreaser.
- Scissors - sharp scissors to cut the foil.
- Rubber cement - to attach patterns to the steel.
- We will also demo Keum Boo using a table top kiln (Ultralite). If you have one of the small trinket kilns, pull it out and have it available.
- You'll need the usual array of hand tools - burnishers, files, hammers, sandpaper, etc. ... anything you normally use in your work will also work for steel. Mild steel will not harm hand tools that are made of hardened tool steel.
Materials Kit. The required Basic Kit for this workshop includes 1” x 1” square of gold foil, 4” x 4” square of silver foil, four 3” x 6” sheets of 20g mild steel, sample of the appropriate flux and sealing wax for steel, tracing paper for cutting designs, brass scratch brush for cleaning steel, small abrasive pads for adding “tooth” to the steel surface and several useful handouts: patterns for two class projects, presentation handouts, material & supplies purchasing source sheets. Additional optional items can be added when ordering. This class has passed. For current offerings, see our Classes page.
"Bette is a wonderful instructor. She is clear and well-prepared. She focuses on individual students as well as the group and sincerely supports everyone's success. Her passion for her medium is evident and it's contagious! On a personal level, I had little experience with steel and none with keum boo, so the learning curve was a bit steep. It would have helped me to have a couple of precut shapes, even just circles, so I could jump in more quickly and get more practice. That said, having the two patterns is helpful for having a "ready-made" project that provides practice in working with steel (piercing and forming) as well as the keum boo technique. Looking forward to more classes with Bette and Anneville!" ~ Nancy L., San Diego, CA.
"The workshop was so great! Great information and so well organized! Looking forward to another one in the future!" ~ Ellen I., Los Angeles, CA

Past onsite classes & Workshops 2018-2020
San Diego Jewelry Lab was originally known as Anneville Jewelry Lab because it was a brick & mortar jewelry co-work space located next to Anne Wolf's studio in Liberty Station as part of the NTC Arts District. We offered multi-week classes, independent study and 1-5 day workshops. Topics covered a wide range of the jewelry/metals field, from absolute beginner basics to advanced specialty techniques such as mokume gane chisel-patterning. Due to COVID, we moved our classes online and continue to develop and grow our community, now regularly host students from across the U.S. and around the world.
Two Sides, One Story
Pin mechanisms and brooch back design
Visiting Artist Workshop with Master German Metalsmith Daniela Malev
3-day Intensive - cancelled due to COVID.
In the field of contemporary jewelry the brooch is a beloved classic. One of the challenges of making a good brooch is to find an artful solution for the pin which connects the piece securely to the wearer. Far from being merely a functional, invisible part of the backside, the pin should contribute to the aesthetic value of the piece and it deserves to be developed with equal importance. This workshop guides you through a conscious approach to the design of the brooch back and pin. You will be introduced to a variety of pin mechanisms and guided through exercises covering various needle techniques and ways of thinking about what a needle can be. We will then delve into realizing them technically. You will learn how to integrate the brooch back and the pin mechanism into the whole creative process, thereby enhancing the aesthetic value and design impact of the piece. The overall goal of this workshop is to teach you technical skills that are rooted in a new way of thinking: a holistic approach to the brooch. Students should not bring finished pieces which are “just missing the pin.” Instead, bring different materials and fragments or experiments which could turn into a brooch and become a prototype for pieces done after the workshop. Students may also bring finished brooches for discussion/ideas. This class was cancelled due to COVID. For current offerings, see our Classes page.

Marriage of Metals Brooch
September 11 - October 23, 2019 - 7 week series on Wednesdays 9am-1pm
Instructor: Anne Wolf. Tuition: $336 + $20 materials fee payable in class.
Marriage of Metals has similarities to wood marquetry or stained glass - it involves sawing out simple shapes of different colors of metal (we’ll be using copper, brass, silver, even exotic Japanese alloys) so that they fit together like a puzzle. The puzzle pieces will be soldered together, then filed and sanded until the pattern is clean and flat. Marriage of metals is ideal for simple geometric designs of two-three colors. Once the solder clean-up is done, we will create made-from-scratch brooch (pin) findings. Or you can use your married metal piece to create earrings, a pendant, a box lid, or more! This is a great class for those wanting more experience soldering and filing/finishing, and those who like a clean, geometric look to their work. Use of Japanese alloys and patinas will also be covered. Intermediate/advanced. Advanced students wishing to use this class time for independent study are also welcome. Sorry, this class has passed. Steel & Gold Workshop
Visiting Artist Workshop - Bette Barnett August 23-25, 2019 - 3-day intensive, Fri-Sat & Sun 9am-4pm Instructor: Bette Barnett. Tuition $440 plus $50 materials fee payable in class. Steel is an amazing metal – strong, light weight and malleable. One of the most fascinating characteristics of steel is its affinity for gold. Simply put, steel “loves” gold and marrying the two results in dramatic mixed metals jewelry that responds to today’s aesthetic for work that ranges from bold and rich to gritty and rustic. |
|
In this three-day workshop, you will learn how to create dramatic steel and gold jewelry. We’ll cover how to work with mild (cold rolled) steel and explore techniques required to create jewelry from steel, including sourcing, cutting, forming, texturing, patinating and finishing. During the workshop you will learn how to alloy and roll our own gold, torch-fuse gold to steel and apply gold to steel using the Keum Boo technique. At the completion of the workshop, you’ll have at least one finished piece and other in-progress work that you can complete in your own studio. You’ll also come away with the skills you need to create dramatic, eye-catching steel and gold jewelry. Students must also bring 2 pennyweights of 24k gold casting grain (available from Rio Grande), more details sent after registration. . This class has passed. Join our waiting list for the next one.

Torch Fired Enamel Earrings or Pendant
May 18 and 19, 2019 - Saturday & Sunday 9am-4pm
Instructor: Julie Monroe. Tuition $110 + approximate materials fee $20 payable in class.
If you’ve never tried enameling this fast-paced and fun class is a great place to start. This class is great for beginners and advanced silversmiths alike. Torch fired enamel is a visual technique so you will spend some time watching Julie demonstrate the fusing and torch firing techniques. Julie will bring finished sample tiles showing color and technique results to aid in choosing your color and technique selections. Then the time is yours to sample and play with complimentary bare sample tiles. Once you are comfortable you will move to your project metal and make your actual earrings. Once you finish your initial piece if you would like to make more, Julie will have additional copper to purchase; and if you feel confident you may upgrade and purchase silver! All levels. Uchidashi: The Basics Workshop - Sold Out!
Visiting Artist Workshop - Ford Hallam
April 1-5, 2019 - 5 day intensive Monday-Friday 9am-4pm
Instructor: Ford Hallam. Tuition $825 (plus uchidashi tool kit $225 payable separately).
A thorough grounding in the Japanese metal forming technique called uchidashi or 'pushing down.' In Ford's words: "Uchidashi is sometimes described as being like Chasing and Repoussé but is actually quite different. It is best described as a form of metal raising with punches rather than a hammer and on pitch instead of steel stakes. This allows for quite high relief and complex forms to be worked up out of flat sheet. Traditionally, uchidashi was the process Japanese metal artists used to create menuki, the remarkable little sculptures that adorn the hilts of the Samurai sword. Pictured are the two exercises we’ll be using to introduce you to this exciting technique. I’ll also be showing you how to achieve that striking ‘fire’ patina on copper, ‘hi-do’." The uchidashi tool kit is comprised of 15 punches, 1 scraper and 1 hammer. We'll be shaping and heat treating the punches as part of the class. You will leave the class with a full set of tools, ready to continue practicing the technique (just add your own pitch bowl). The toolkit is offered at considerable discount for being a class attendee. The set will be ordered directly from Michael Coffey - his contact details will be supplied after registration, and your kit will be waiting for you at Anneville. This class has passed. Introduction to Japanese Metalworking Workshop - Sold Out!
Visiting Artist Workshop - Ford Hallam
March 25-29, 2019 - 5 day intensive Monday-Friday 9am-4pm
Instructor: Ford Hallam. Tuition $825 plus tool kit about $100 TBD
An introduction to classical Japanese metalworking. In Ford's words:
"In this class I’ll begin by introducing the ‘kata-kiri’ chisel. This is a relatively simple chisel to make so serves a gentle introduction to the delicacies of chisel making. It’s also the most expressive of chisels in terms of the sorts of marks it can make. Traditionally it’s this chisel that was used create the beautiful chiselled pictures that mimic ink painting but in a creative metalworkers hands the possibilities are endless. Following on from the kata-kiri chisel we’ll tackle the basic ‘V’ chisel. This is quite a demanding form to make but it is pretty much the basic line making chisel in the toolbox with its use being the bedrock of inlay and carving technique. After having dealt with these two chisels we’ll move on to some basic wire inlay. We’ll make a few suitable tools for that process and have fun getting tiny threads of brass and silver wire stuck into minute grooves and channels. And while time won't allow for us to properly delve into the technique of ‘hon-taka-zogan’, or true raised inlay, I will be able to demonstrate that process for class participants as a taster for the future."
The tool kit comprising a single hammer and 8 chisel blanks will probably cost around $100. (Exact price to be confirmed). The set will be ordered directly from Michael Coffey - his contact details will be supplied after registration, and your kit will be waiting for you at Anneville. Join our waiting list for the next one.

Copper and Japanese Patinas Workshop
February 9, 2019 - Saturday 9am-4pm
Instructor: Anne Wolf. Tuition: $140
The final step in finishing a mokume gane piece is to apply a patina to highlight the colors of the different metals. This can be a tricky business, and is often done in a rush at the end of a class. But not here! Spend a full day exploring the different ways to patinate copper and copper alloys - we go way beyond liver of sulfur. We'll cover the mysteries of getting copper red, how to tease out the most contrast between your copper and brass, and of course all about rokusho (yes, there will be grated daikon). Intermediate/advanced students, bring your ready-to-patinate work to this class. It doesn't have to be mokume, but should have some mixed metals, hopefully copper and silver (shakudo and shibuichi would be great too). We'll also have sheets of plain copper available for those just wanting to learn and practice the techniques and color possibilities. This class has passed. Join our waiting list for the next one.

"I really enjoyed the class and doing the sample projects we did. For me it was just the right amount of activity and time to do them. Doing the sample projects was much less stressful than doing a finished jewelry project. And I would highly recommend this class to anyone who might like to learn the patina techniques taught in the class. And the teacher is excellent and provides enough instruction to guide students to learn the techniques." ~ Karen S., Chula Vista
