Carol Holaday
Artist's Statement
Much of my work is inspired by the materials and techniques that I enjoy exploring. When I began thinking of what to create for the EMERGE theme I was overwhelmed by ideas and thoughts about what it meant to me personally. Sorting through it took a while, but then I decided to focus on the same techniques I have been experimenting with during this past year to express a specific narrative. Basically, the feelings of being in a fog, emerging from the darkness, and seeing that the sun is still shining. Two pieces began with the same photo of a group of trees, one is enameled and the other has a dark patina. The third piece is an Homage to Rothko and makes use of layers of gold foil and leaf fused on fine silver in the keum-boo technique. My daughter remarked that it looks like the sun coming up… thus the title.
