Anne Wolf: Co-Founder and Instructor
I have been teaching jewelry/metalwork classes and creating custom mokume-gane wedding rings, jewelry and one-of-a-kind metal art objects since 1991. I earned my Masters of Fine Art training under Helen Shirk and Arline Fisch at San Diego State University. I have taught jewelry/metals courses at Southwestern College and at San Diego Continuing Education. I began learning how to fuse, forge and pattern mokume gane using traditional Japanese methods training with Toshiyuki Kawai, Earl Bushey, Jerry Blanchard and Gene Novagratsky. My work has been shown across the U.S. and internationally in venues including the Deutsches Goldschmiedehaus in Hanau, Germany and the Tsubame Industrial Materials Museum in Tsubame, Japan. Ame Stanko: Co-Founder and Host
After graduating from UCSD I worked as a volunteer in Mozambique, as a theatre projectionist and as a tour guide. In 1997 I created Pixel Lava Interactive to provide graphic design, websites, and multimedia to small businesses and nonprofits. I currently offer limited multimedia services and run the online shop Mondo Bop. In 2018, Anne and I founded Anneville Jewelry Lab - a jewelry metal arts school in San Diego where we hosted dozens of classes and events featuring international instructors. When covid ended that venture, we went online doing our Metal Arts Adventures and the Sawing Circle. After many years working alone in my home office I love being a part of this community and every skill I ever learned applies here, where I collaborate with a group of inspiring, fascinating artists. Our History
From November 2018 to March 2020, San Diego Jewelry Lab was known as Anneville Jewelry Lab because it was a brick & mortar jewelry co-work space located next to Anne Wolf's studio in Liberty Station as part of the NTC Arts District.
We offered multi-week classes, independent study and 1-5 day workshops. Topics covered a wide range of the jewelry/metals field, from absolute beginner basics to advanced specialty techniques such as mokume gane chisel-patterning. Many of our students took classes multiple times to perfect their techniques and gain inspiration from each other. Our workshops drew students from around the U.S. and internationally. In addition to classes we had open lab time where jewelry metal arts makers worked together, enjoyed our little "Broken Sawblade Cafe" (which became the Peg and Pickle Pub after hours) and shopped for tools and supplies in our small shop. We also hosted a monthly First Friday Open Studio where makers and the public nibbled yummy snacks, watched live demos, shopped our gallery case featuring work by our teachers and students and generally mingled for some fun metal arts evenings.
On March 19th, 2020 the state of California issued a mandatory COVID shelter in place order and all non-essential businesses were closed so we immediately moved our classes online. While some businesses opened and closed over the following months, we never felt it was acceptable to endanger a single student in the name of money. Instead, we threw ourselves into developing online classes and free events to make up for our loss of community. We quickly developed a free, live show on Zoom called Metal Arts Adventures and we started hosting our free online Sawing Circles. Both were met with praise.
We always knew that the Lab was bigger than one room; our space was only 300 sq ft after all. It was really all about the creative, funny, caring people who assembled to teach and take classes. As COVID continued, we made the decision to close our space permanently on July 1st, 2020. Since then we have continued to develop and grow our classes and now regularly host students and teachers from across the U.S. and around the world. Rather than dying, Anneville Jewelry Lab has evolved to San Diego Jewelry Lab to better reflect our roots and we've had more success than ever in achieving our goal of connecting jewelry and metal arts people from various disciplines around the world.
Join us for an upcoming event and find out why our motto is #EmbraceYourVises.
